Something new and exciting has arrived in the NZ food processing market. Sanitas NZ Ltd has launched their bonded QAC range of sanitisers and disinfectants.
The dream – enduring antimicrobial protection
Quaternary Ammonium compounds (quats) are acknowledged as one of the better types of disinfectants/sanitisers available and are extremely popular in the NZ food processing market especially BZK. Unfortunately like most sanitizers, BZK and the newer generation quats lack longevity, as they are easily removed from the treated surface by post treatment rinsing.
In the early 1980’s research chemists in the United States developed and patented a quat that had been reacted with a silane to produce (3-(trimethoxysilyl propyl) ammonium chloride (silquat).
Getting there – bonded sanitisers and disinfectants
This unique quat has all the anti-bacterial properties of standard quats with the extra benefit of bonding to the treated surface via the silane chemistry at the tail of the molecule. Silanes have been used as adhesion promoters for many years and even solved the heat tile problems on the NASA space shuttles.
As the patents expired a number of companies carried out further research on silquats and slowly introduced them into the textile industry as fungal treatments, bactericides and odour eliminators. Alongside this work, methods were developed to stabilize low concentrations of silquat in water, leading to the introduction of this technology into the food processing and health care industries.
Fresche and Sanitas – Innovative partnership
Fresche Bioscience Pty Ltd is a multinational corporation who has taken this technology to the next level and has developed silquats that can be directly incorporated into plastics and most other food packaging materials.
Fresche EF 075 Plus is MPI approved for C22, C39, C54 (all animal product except dairy) and Fresche EF 075 has Asure Quality assessment H3254 food/beverage/dairy factory food areas for
1) Incidental contact with food contact surfaces-and also for hands and cotton fabrics.
2) For food contact surfaces with product residues monitored with MRLs
Sanitas NZ Ltd is made up of a team of leading industrial experts who have identified a need for high performance sanitation products that minimise maintenance and cleaning costs but are also ecologically sustainable.
Products based on renewable raw materials
The Fresche range of products is based on renewable raw materials and Sanitas are excited about the long term prospects for a total food safety solution including packaging and transportation.
The technical staff at Sanitas is also actively investigating cost effective alternatives for quats, especially in the dairy sector and are currently assessing an exciting new development based on renewable raw materials. Another area of interest is based on oxygen donors that are completely stable and easy to use.
